Omega 3

Improves Asthma Symptoms

Children with autism have less food variety and more nutritional, metabolic issues

A trio of supplements—omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamin C, and zinc may improve several symptoms associated with asthma. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted by scientists from Tanta University in Egypt found that the three nutrients improved lung function and markers that indicated lung inflammation.

Sixty children with persistent asthma participated in the study. The children, who were an average age of eight, were given alternating phases of supplementation with omega-3 (1000mg), zinc (15mg) and vitamin C (200mg). They took the supplements either singly or in combination for six weeks. Asthma symptoms were measured using the childhood asthma control test (C-ACT). Lung function and pulmonary markers were also measured.

The results showed that the children who took supplements (either singly or a combination of all three nutrients) had a significant improvement in their C-ACT scores—from 16.5 to 22.1.

The researchers noted that both omega-3 and zinc are anti-inflammatories, and vitamin C is an antioxidant.

“Children with moderately persistent bronchial asthma may get benefit from their diet supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamin C,” wrote researchers led by Mohammed Al Biltagi.

In addition, recent research from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center found that folic acid may lessen the symptoms of asthma and allergies.

Almost 20 million Americans suffer from asthma, and the numbers of people diagnosed with the condition are rising.

Omega-3 and Type 2 Diabetes

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that come from foods such as fish, fish oil, vegetable oil (primarily canola and soybean), walnuts, and wheat germ. Omega-3 supplements are available as capsules or oils (such as fish oil). Omega-3s are important in a number of bodily functions, including the movement of calcium and other substances in and out of cells, the relaxation and contraction of muscles, blood clotting, digestion, fertility, cell division, and growth. In addition, omega-3s are thought to protect against heart disease, reduce inflammation, and lower triglyceride levels.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids have been researched for their effect on controlling glucose and reducing heart disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, but do not affect blood glucose control, total cholesterol, or HDL (good) cholesterol in people with diabetes. In some studies, omega-3 fatty acids also raised LDL (bad) cholesterol. Additional research, particularly long-term studies that look specifically at heart disease in people with diabetes, is needed.
  • Omega-3s appear to be safe for most adults at low-to-moderate doses. Safety questions have been raised about fish oil supplements, because some species of fish can be contaminated by substances such as mercury, pesticides, or PCBs. In high doses, fish oil can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and drugs used for high blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids may be helpful in psychiatric care

Omega-3 fatty acids may hold promise for use in psychiatry, particularly for depression and bipolar disorder according to a recent article in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. Marlene Freeman, M.D., and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of research looking at omega-3 fatty acid supplements as treatments for psychiatric conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that the body cannot make on its own, so they must come from food sources. The richest source of these fatty acids is fish and seafood, but they can also be found in flaxseeds and some eggs.

The authors suggest that omega-3 supplements may be helpful for people with depression or bipolar disorder as a complement to standard care. However, they were unable to determine benefits for other conditions such as schizophrenia and dementia. They also "strongly recommend that patients with psychiatric disorders should not elect supplementation with omega-3 [fatty acids] in lieu of established psychiatric treatment options."

They further recommend studies to look at how the nutrient may work, and large trials to conclusively determine the utility of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatric care.

Why not Fish Oil?

I'm often asked what makes Mila a better (safer) choice than fish oil pills.  I like to refer people to an excerpt from Robert Kennedy Jr as he speaks of the levels of mercury in today's fish...

Robert Kennedy:

...I have been fighting for water and fisheries and working for fisherman for twenty-one years and today in nineteen states it’s now unsafe to eat any freshwater fish because of mercury contamination. In forty-eight states, at least some or most of the fish are now unsafe to eat from mercury contamination. In fact the only two states where all the fish are still safe to eat are Wyoming and Alaska where the Republican controlled legislatures have refused to authorize the money to test the fish. In all of the other states, at least some if not all of the fish are unsafe to eat. We know a lot about mercury that we didn’t know a few years ago. We know, for example, that one out of every six American women now has so much mercury in her womb that her children are at risk for a grim inventory of diseases including autism, blindness, mental retardation, heart, liver, kidney disease.

Chia...Healthier than Fish Oil and Flax Seed

There's plenty of information telling us how powerful and necessary Omega 3's are in our diet. But there doesn't seem to be much information on the balance necessary with Omega 6's.

The proper balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 is very important to understand. Understanding this will help to understand why Chia seeds should be included in your daily food intake. Consuming Chia in your is much more important than its more famous counterpart in the Omega family (fish oil / flax seed) The reason why is balance.

Omega-6 acids are much more prevalent than Omega-3 in most foods consumed in Western diets. Nutrition experts say a healthy ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in a diet ranges between 1:1 and 4:1, but the typical North American diet has a ratio of up to 30 times the amount of Omega-6 than Omega-3.

A food such as corn oil can be as skewed as 50:1 in favor of Omega-6 and even the soybean, used in tofu and as a staple in diets of the Far East, has a disproportionately high amount of Omega-6 with a 7:1 ratio.

The Power of Chia

The Chia seed, has more than three times the amount of Omega 3 than Omega-6. If one were to consume more Chia in their diet, the result would be a balance of the ratio of fatty-acid intake in your daily nutrition. A correct balance of Omega-6 and Omega-3 will leave you with far healthier brain function and allows for normal development of the body.

While Omega-3 is available in products such as fish oil and flax seed, the purity of its concentration in those non-grain forms is questionable. For example, fish oil is a processed food. This diminishes its nutritional value. Flax seed needs to be ground before being consumed. This causes a loss of the nutritional value.

By contrast, Chia seed can be eaten unprocessed and without any chemical spray necessary, making it the most reliable, most efficient, whole, raw food form of Omega-3 we know of!
